Finding Education Books

Resources

  • MOBIUS Library Catalog - Search the MOBIUS Consortium catalog and request physical/print books be sent to Stephens for pickup. Books are generally ready to be picked up in two to three work days.

  • eMO Electronic Books - Search and view over 250,000 electronic books. Entirely full-text.

  • eBook Education Collection - Features more than 3,200 titles supporting students and faculty in the Education discipline.

Education Print Book Locations

Education books are generally located in the following sections (second floor of the Stephens Library):

  • L - Education (general)

  • LA - History of Education

  • LB - Theory and practice

  • LC - Special aspects of education

The Education Branch Library, located in Hickman Hall, includes books on education, curriculum, children’s books, and resource kits.

The Education Resource Collection (ERC), located on the second floor of the Stephens Library, consists of children’s fiction and non-fiction books.

 

Search Tips

Looking for books specifically in the Education Library? Try using the Stephens Library Catalog’s Advanced Search function and select “Stephens Education Library” for the Location, or add “b:sce” to your existing search.

Note that education books in the Hugh Stephens Library have call numbers assigned using Library of Congress Classification, while books in the Education Resource Collection and at the Education Branch Library have call numbers assigned using the Dewey Decimal system.

    Content types: articles. Covers a wide range of subjects and contains the full text of nearly 12,400 journals, including 10,900 peer-reviewed journals. Learn More.

  • Child Development & Adolescent Studies

    Content types: articles, books, reports. Variety of current and historical literature related to the growth and development of children through age 21. Learn More.

  • ERIC

    Content type: articles, reports. The Education Resource Information Center (ERIC) provides journal articles and reports on education-related topics. Contains more than a million records and links to approximately 264,000 full-text documents. Learn More.

  • Professional Development Collection

    Content type: articles, reports. Contains the full text for nearly 500 education journals, including over 300 peer-reviewed journals. Also contains more than 225 education-related reports.

  • Teacher Reference Center

    Content types: articles. Provides indexing and abstracts for 280 peer-reviewed journals pertinent to teachers.

  • Stephens Library Quick Search

    Content types: articles, books. Search across most all of Stephens Library holdings as well as millions of additional books and articles using the EBSCOhost Discovery Service. Learn More.

Search Tips

When searching these databases, you will likely come across articles that are not immediately available. In such cases, choose to “Request It” and complete the process. Articles usually become available within one business day, although it can take as many as five days. You can review your request history and make requests from scratch by using the following link:

Resources

  • Explora - Elementary Schools

    Content type: articles, books, videos. Designed for elementary school students according to their needs and search abilities. Provides access to age-appropriate materials. Includes topic overviews that provide students with a starting point for research, and also includes 60,000 videos from the Associated Press.

  • Explora Educators Edition

    Content type: articles, reports. Includes more than 2,100 full text scholarly journals and over 1,700 peer-reviewed, full-text journals. Includes full text for over 500 education journals. Provides access to lesson plans, students tools, curriculum standards and links to sites valuable for teachers.

Search Tips

Explora offers tailored interfaces for access to a variety of content from EBSCO. The educators edition offers several resources for using the elementary edition with students, but they otherwise are fairly separate.

Resources

  • TeachingBooks

    Content type: articles, books, audio, videos. This literacy-focused resource offers author interviews, book guides, activities, lessons, full book readings (often from the authors themselves). Search tools allow users to identify books of interest by grade level, curricular area, genre, culture, or awards.

  • LearningExpress Library - Repository of educator resources and practice tests for a variety of disciplines. Includes practice tests for the LSAT, GRE, Praxis, and others. (Stephens subscription)

  • Discovery Education Teacher Resources - Offers a broad range of free resources that complement and extend learning beyond the classroom.

  • Smithsonian Learning Lab - Smithsonian lesson plans emphasize inquiry-based learning using primary sources and museum collections.

  • Khan Academy - Khan Academy offers practice exercises and instructional videos in math, science, computer programming, history, art history, economics, and more.

  • OER Commons - a database of open educational resources, including lesson plans, activities, textbooks, and more, searchable by subject, education level, and education standards.

  • PBS LearningMedia - free videos, interactives, and lesson plans, designed to align with standards and browsable by subject and grade. A student version of this site is also available.

  • New York Times Learning Network - teaching resources and student activities centered on news and current events, primarily for middle and high school but in many cases appropriate for or adaptable to use with elementary age students.

The web is full of resources for education! Consider seeking information strategically, with a clear goal in mind. What type of information are you looking for? Do you need a particular format? Who is authoritative in this area? Direct your search based on your answers.
